Reading in School

Reading is a fundamental skill. Without the ability to read to an age appropriate level and fluency, children  will be incapable of accessing the rest of the curriculum. With this in mind we give a lot of time to the teaching of phonics and early reading. We use Bug Club phonics as our scheme.

With the support of our parents association, we have invested in good quality books for the children to enjoy.

Guided reading takes place on a regular basis, where the teacher takes a small group of children with a appropriate level of book. From this they teach the skills of basic reading but also of comprehension and prediction.

Independent reading is important too and we ask parents to hear children read at home on a daily basis.

We still invest time in one to one reading with an adult in school when appropriate.

We want to develop a life long love of reading so particularly in KS2 we encourage children to reading a wide variety of texts.
