How does music support  our curriculum intent and Christian Vision?

Put simply music is fundamental to being human. The impact of music on development of the brain from the earliest beginnings to the profound effect it can have on those with memory loss, music has an unique ability to draw people together and touch people's lives. Whether it is listening to an orchestra, making music with friends or singing at a football match, music stimulates the brain in a way that no other subject can. We believe that music is another creative language which allows children to express themselves. Learning music connects children to a rich cultural heritage. Also, it is just fun!!!!! 

How do we structure the curriculum in Music?

Currently, we use the Charanga scheme to structure our music curriculum and following this scheme for both KS1 and KS2 ensures we have good coverage and progression in the curriculum. In the current academic year we are taking part in a complete reworking of our music curriculum and all the staff are taking part in an extensive CPD programme through the voices foundation. This year we are developing a music curriculum with singing at its heart. From September we will move completely over to the new programme. The draft progression document is shown below. This will develop all the key elements from the Ofsted research review series on music and the national plan for music provision. From September all children in KS2 at Bishop Wilton and at Beswick will also start weekly whole class music teaching using the trombone. 

Music in the Early Years

Young children love to creative music and we give them access to instruments, tuned and untuned, so that they can explore their music making. Singing nursery rhymes and simple songs is a part of the every day curriculum in the foundation stage to help children find their voice. 

The Wider Curriculum in Music

Wte have strong links with the music support service in from the Local Authority and with their support we offer instrumental music tutition to children from Year 2 upwards. Wherever possible we give the children "live" music experiences whether that is a visiting group or musician or visiting the West End to see a musical.
