How does Spanish support our curriculum intent and Christian Vision?

Learning Spanish opens up children's understanding of language even more. It reinforces concepts of nouns, verbs and adjectives already taught in English. Children will acquire language learning strategies for memorisation and retrieval as well as for listening, reading and understanding, all vital skills. Children will learn about the differences between Spanish and English and appreciate and be able to copy the sound of the language at text level through songs, stories and rhymes. Importantly, learning another language gives children a deeper understanding of cultural differences and similarities and helps the children understand that they are part of a global community. 

How do we structure the curriculum in Spanish?

The overall curriculum plan for KS2 Spanish has the following design:

• Time allocation (realistic yet optimal)
  • 60 minutes per week in total
  • a 30-minute lesson
  • five mini follow ups (4 of 5 minutes, 1 of 10 minutes)
• The three strands phonics and grammar repeat in Y3 & 4 and then again in Y5 & 6
  • vocabulary varies (so that lessons themselves are different )
  • Structure 2-year rolling)
    • the repetition of phonics and grammar content together with the variation in vocabulary makes it possible for the years Rojo and Amarillo to be completed in either order, and the same for Azul and Verde
